Brass nipples allow valves, unions, strainers, pressure gauges and other components with female NPT thread connections to be installed in-line in a piping system by connecting the threaded openings together. They can also joint two male threaded fittings like elbows.
Brass is the predominant material used for commercial and industrial nipples due to its strength, durability, and corrosion resistance. Brass is an excellent all-around material choice for nipples across a wide variety of piping system applications.
Brass Nipple Manufacturing Process
1. Alloy Melting & Casting
Nipple production starts with melting and casting brass rod of the desired alloy composition. This ensures consistent metallurgical properties throughout the rod stock.
2. Hot Working
The brass rods are extruded or drawn through dies to reduce diameter and enhance material properties. This aligns the grain structure.
3. Cooling & Straightening
Precise temperature controls during cooling prevent residual stress in the grain structure to avoid warping. Automated straightening ensures straightness within 0.005" tolerance.
4. Cutting to Length
Rods are cut via automated saws to lengths needed for the nipple design specification. Cut edges are deburred.
5. Machining
The nipple body is loaded onto high precision CNC lathes that machine the outside diameter and bore. A second operation cuts the NPT threads to gauge tolerances under coolant.
6. Testing & Quality Control
Dimensioning equipment verifies critical measurements like thread diameters and thread engagement. Pressure testing checks for leaks and flaws.
7. Packaging & Shipment
Nipples are protected with packaging designed to prevent damage and are shipped via well-established logistics channels to distributors or end customers.
